CC: hi everyone this is AJ and welcome back to the channel and welcome to my review for the new movie The Reef stalked a new Shark film yes I like reviewing shark films um I do put myself through them I like a good Shark film unfortunately Shark film and good very rarely go hand in hand their terms that don't often come together um so is this film any different is this film changed the path for shark films has this film got a bite to it let's find out foreign yes so I can take this review in two directions can I can do a proper review like what I do or I could do a very male chauvinistic comedic review for you what one shall I do I'm going to do the proper review but I'll tell you what at the end I will give you my chauvinistic review as well and why not just for fun remember that it is just for fun it's not saying this is who I am as a person it is for fun but this film had some questions to it so anyway this film is a sequel to the 2010 I think it's 2010 it's about a decade ago um Australian Shark film The Reef yes um although it's not sequel in the terms of character or anything like that it's another Shark film but this film is actually brought To Us by Andrew troki who is the writer and director of that very film The Reef um not only that he also directed and wrote um the first black water film The Alligator film and the jungle yes and this film has a primarily female cast including actresses Teresa Leanne Andrew saskia Archer and Kate Lister um there happens to be only one male person in the film itself and that's at the very start of the movie otherwise it is a very very female-centric movie now film starts off with two sisters two friends on this Reef Expedition that they've set up they go diving quite a bit and after they finish they come back you come to find out that one of the two sisters is in a very abusive relationship goes off with her abusive partner and while the other sister goes home to her younger sister only to get a call saying please come over so she rushes over um only to find her sister has been killed by this abusive partner the film then jumps forward nine months and this sister gets together with the two friends and the younger sister is there also to go out on a sort of reef Expedition but this older sister has been missing for some time like she sort of went off to India and to do some stuff and get away from it all um but she's suffering with a sort of a traumatic event because she found her dead sister in the bath so there's this water phobia type thing going on obviously they go out they go on these little kayaks and they've got a kayak for a few days off to these islands only they start getting hunted by a great white shark at least it is a great white shark in the video Food Today show um and inevitably one gets killed um you then come to this island where this young girl gets attacked and the leg gets injured and they all pile onto the island but there's no phones or anything on this island so they have to go across to this other Island and that's where the rest of the film occurs in the stretch between yeah so this film this film is it's a film of two halves right because um it's a very frustrating movie a very frustrating movie indeed now props to the writer and director um more so for the directing the directing of the film is quite strong I can't um that there are elements to the film that show a strength from this director's um directing style however I believe he's stretching himself as a writer and director as the narrative flow of the film goes the the characters start to do make stupid stupid decisions and this is where the frustration for the film comes in one girl gets injured and she's in the water so another one decides to jump in and swim over to him why not just row over to him um after they've been on this island they they they decide to go to this other Island and take this boat with them a boat that isn't particularly sea worthy so they tie these two um to the row boats the um the canoe things that they've got to either side to keep it buoyant but yet all three of them decide to travel over um whereas one of them should have stayed behind on the island to assist with the young girl who's been injured but they all get into it and pile into it thus making the journey slower thus making more water get poured on board and then when they decide to try and trap the shark they let the the dinghies go so they're all then stuck in this free man but all three of them in this little boat that's obviously got a leak to it and they know it's got a leak to it and oh my God it's just so frustrating that these people are doing the things that they're doing in the context of this film not only that there's an element in the film there's a point in the film where it seems like the writer this Andrew troki forgot who he's writing for that there's a shift in character Dynamic um in in what one character is then becomes another character and that character becomes like that character and I'm talking out about the two sisters and a reversal which then reverses back about 20 minutes later and it makes no goddamn sense in the context of the writing that being said the editing is very nice some of the shark stuff is pretty damn good because what they've done is they've actually used real shark footage real shark attack footage like when sharks are going to be attacking lumps of meat and all this sort of thing but they've sort of spliced it together with um elements of their film so you have the top part is is up there is their film of the people dangling in the water and then the bottom part is the shark coming in and and the way they've done it does look pretty good it's not only heavily reliant on CGI or anything like this there are a couple of ropey bits when there's a shadow under the water approaching the boat and it looks very jittery and very fast and and just nonsense but however the film seems to want to give you this metaphor that that men are bad um basically you've got this man at the beginning this is the one male he's not in the lead the one male cast member who's this this man that injures this girl and then the rest of the film is the shark is the man essentially the shark is stalking these girls the shark is a metaphor a living metaphor form a man doing this hunting them and wanting to hurt them and this girl has to get over her fear of what she's seen of a a sister dead in the bath caused by a man to get to to bring the shark down stop the shark so it's a very man-hate and Centric movie in that sense which bugs me it really does um yes it's it's not a good film it's not a good film um like I said there is a talent to be had with the director I think the director has has a a certain um he's not a bad director he has potential shall we say um he has directed some other films obviously but I don't know whether she's but you should be writing them as well because if this character swap around where and the motivations that the characters have for doing what they do it's just stupid throughout the entire film stupid decision after stupid decision after stupid decision that makes it very difficult to to to to to to to watch now now the one thing that shark films have all in common for the most part you know these these short films you get today is that the characters are also uninteresting and boring and and 50 of the cast here is very much like that um you know some of them are written okay they're not not too bad you know that the two primary girls but it's just a change around like a mention that just doesn't work for a minute just I don't know anyway so as a musical score I can't tell you um it's very much influenced I did see bits I thought this is influenced by Jaws some of the film is heavily influenced by Jaws the yellow um yellow things and Jaws that get taken under the barrels they do that kind of thing but with one of the um boats that they've got their little row boat canoe things um very similar very influenced by that um is it worth watching no not really not no no no no no no no no no no no it's not it's not no but anyway so they're my thoughts on this film now before I get into my comedic um review my male chauvinistic version of this review um hit subscribe button come and join the channel and leave me a comment down below now before I get into this this doesn't reflect on me and my opinions in life it's just what I picked up from this film so here we go film stars one man yes five minutes at the beginning the man kills a woman because he's nasty because he's a man yeah men can't be trusted the shark is the man the man is the shark one is the metaphor for the other so off this event at the beginning the film jumps forward by an entire pregnancy length yes now what happens at the end of pregnancy baby comes out new life but blood blood what happened to the shark blood in the water yes so these four women they go off on this little canoeing Expedition in C to go somewhere I don't know why do women have in common I will say one thing these four women haven't been sticking around together for long so they've not aligned yes they've not aligned you know what I mean they're probably all bleeding at different times should we say one of the better term so one of them at least one of them it's her fault that this shark starts to track him down her fault yes but what does that say I don't know I could read something into that but it's her fault no doubt that this shark has smelled blood in the water it starts attacking them all each one of them the other frame wake up they shoot decisions that's what their character motivations around and then they all start getting stalked by this man this gray man they refer to it as a gray man as well um they get stalked by him he's a man ruthless uncompromising vicious single-minded he wants to hurt them he wants to kill them he wants blood he's out for blood Fair blood so they all step up they become strong because women are strong men are weak yes so the shark gets defeated obviously at the end that's what happens isn't it um so yeah so there we go the man is defeated by these women who stuck together and are strong in this man-hating movie of a Shark film it doesn't like men doesn't like you doesn't like me doesn't like anyone don't watch this film watch that one hundred times better anyway that was it and this is AJ um I'm gonna stop my ramblings now I don't know rambling's on Madman see you on the next one take care all and uh remember that was just fun take it easy and uh see you later goodbye

Caption : The True Story behind the Shark attacks in the movie "The Reef" (Full video)
Desc: The Reef is a 2010 Australian survival horror film, written, directed and produced by Andrew Traucki in his second feature film (the first being Black Water). The film is about a group of friends who capsize while sailing to Indonesia and are stalked by a Tiger shark as they try to swim to a nearby island on the Great Barrier Reefs. This is their story. Australian Shark Attacks, Tiger Sharks, The Reef Movie, Great Barrier Reef, Shark Attack near Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Deadly Attacks in Australia,
CC: in 1983 Ray boundy had been living the life he always enjoyed in the beautiful City of Townsville in Northern Australia the father of two was the captain of the new Venture a 45-foot trawler boat he was also very experienced on Friday July 22nd it Ray and his crew boarded the new Venture and were off on their Journey out into the Open Sea also on board with Ray was a second captain 23 year old Dennis Murphy who like Ray also had multiple years of experience on the Open Sea the third member of the crew was 21 year old Lander Horton who was Rey's girlfriend her primary goal was to cook for everyone the crew was headed to an area between Townsville and the Great Barrier Reef because the waters in this area were known for great fishing so they had plans of staying in the area for a few weeks while the first few days of the trip were very uneventful crew even laughing it up and having a good time while out on my Open Seas as the trio continued they just relished and enjoyed Mother Nature it is now the night of July 22nd and quite contrary to the earlier days the Seas have now become quite rough and very dangerous as the captain and his girlfriend continue to try to keep the ship afloat as the clock starts midnight the Seas become even rougher making it nearly impossible for the captain to navigate through the rough Seas as the captain Atlantis struggled to keep it afloat Dennis notices a huge wave approaching the ship on the deck and decides to jump overboard before it hits as the ship capsizes Ray and Mindy who were blindsided by The Wave we're blessed to have been caught in an air pocket in which they were able to escape out of the wheel well back into the open ocean where they all recruit as the three of them got together they realized the gravity of the situation that they were now in they were treading water in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight in the middle of the night and luckily they were able to grab onto the overturned hole of the boat as the three of them assessed their dire situation Rey informed the both of them that according to his last coordinates they were at least 95 kilometers from Townsville and at least 45 kilometers from the nearest Island understanding that swimming these distances even given the fact that they were great swimmers is nearly impossible their next best option would be to try to swim to the Great Barrier Reef authorities believe that the crew likely assumed that it would be safer to swim to the reef rather than stay with the boat which a rescue would take too long and that the boat would probably sink before they were rescued as the three of them continued to decide what they were going to do they gathered some items styrofoam and other items to try and make a makeshift surfboard as the three of them prepared for their swim they dove into the water and began their swim towards the Great Barrier reefs the Great Barrier reefs are known for prime fishing beautiful Waters but they're also known for sharks very deadly sharks and the trio knew this it is now Monday night and things have been going fine up to this point when all of a sudden the Trio notices a fin break the surface of the water they group together in horror being no stranger to Ocean Wildlife Ray quickly once the others that this is a shark as Dennis and Linda become increasingly fearful reinsures them that shark attacks are rare at least under normal circumstances at this point the trio have been traveling for hours paddling and watching for the shark when suddenly rain notices something around its legs that brushes up against him but before he could react the short quickly turned and bit him but now 15-foot tiger shark is now encircling them as the 15-foot tiger sharks hunted Stephen to Rey's thigh he was able to kick it repelling it briefly however the shark has now tasted blood and the trio knew that they were in trouble second to the great white shark and even bull sharks tiger sharks can grow lengths of up to 16 feet long and are extremely aggressive While most sharks have an upper jaw for piercing and a large jaw for grasping and holding its prey the tiger shark can use both its upper and lower jaw for both grasping and cutting its prey resulting in some of the most gruesome shark attacks on record as the night progresses Panic sets in as the swimmers know they must reach the Barrier Islands which is still a ways off and they're only about a quarter of a mile there with a tiger shark hot on their tail and one of them bleeding about 10 minutes passes until their horror they notice a large dorsal fin surfacing again and within a few minutes Dennis yells out and screams in agony that the bastards got my leg it's got my leg as Ray yelled out to Dennis to kick the shark he was hoping that the shark would release him as he did with himself being that it was an exploratory bite the first time only this time the tiger shark has launched a predatory attack on Dennis and didn't let go leaving Rey and Linda and horror watching tennis he lifted in and out of the water until finally they tried swimming over to him what they noticed is that the water became increasingly darker with his blood and as Ray reached Dennis he noticed that his leg was gone after reaching Dennis the two frantically searched for a tourniquet to try and stop the bleeding went to their horror the fan resurfaces and starts heading towards them again at this point Dennis realizes he is not going to survive this ordeal and doesn't want to take his friends down with him so he frantically starts swimming away from them to draw the shark away from him to their heart they realize they can't do anything to save their friend and as they swim away they look back and realize he was lifted out of the water one final time before disappearing beneath the waves in the shark's mouth at this point Linda cannot process what she's just seen and start screaming frantically at this point Ray grabs her and shakes some sense into her reminding her that they must make it to the reef in order to survive otherwise Dennis's sacrifice would have been in vain after two hours of swimming with no interruptions it seems as if the trio is making progress until they notice the shark's fin breaks the surface again and this time it starts circling Rey and Linda once again praying that the shark goes away the two grab hands and hold on tight to one another but to their heart the shark breaks its circling and comes straight for Linda biting into her chest and her arm pulling so hard it ripped her from Ray's grasp during this time Linda only had time enough to let out a little squeal before the Sharks swam off with her in his mouth at this point Ray quickly turns around and starts swimming as fast as he can towards a lodestone reef which he knew he was close to and he could see it as the Mariner continued swimming towards the reef he noticed the shark's fin break again and start coming after him at this point and with adrenaline kicking in Rey is swimming as fast as he ever has in his entire life just then as if it were a divine intervention Rey notices a huge wave which allows him to ride it in towards the reef getting him effectively away from the shark as the exhausted 27 year old reaches the reef the gravity of his situation Dawns upon him and he lets out a cry at 10 40 on Tuesday morning Ray was finally picked up by an Australian rescue helicopter pilot who had been searching for them since the storm started on that previous Sunday it's right captaining a new boat and getting on with his life as a fisherman Ray stated that the traumatic experience of these few days would never ever leave him rest in peace to his comrades now you've heard the facts surrounding the movie The Reef which was based on Rey's true story like share and subscribe to where in the world is Frank and Gina on YouTube God bless

CC: hey guys this is Lucas and welcome to my channel and if you're a subscriber welcome back uh last night I was bored and so I Googled things to watch on Hulu and I came across this movie this shark movie The Reef stalked [Music] big fan of marine biology in fact it's what encouraged me to get a biology degree and I like anything related to the ocean anything related to Ocean sciences and stuff like that and so I figured kill a shark movie that's right up my alley but I have no naivete when it comes to shark movies I know that for every one good shark movie however one good killer shark movie there's about a dozen or so bad ones in fact more than that for anybody interested in the train wreck that is shark movies I would encourage you to watch James rolfe's top 40 shitty shark movies it's either top 40 or top 50. but either way it's a conglomeration of shitty shark movies that he put together to kind of show to people and I think that demonstrates just how many of these there are I mean Jaws was a phenomenon Jaws was a cultural icon something that completely blew the socks off people for better and For Worse like me personally I don't like what it did for shark conservation and I don't like what it did for the ecosystems however the movie itself is great I'm not going to knock the movie the movie is like a b movie but good if that makes sense so when I go into any shitty shark movie I at least want it to just be entertaining and that is why I want to talk about today's movie The Reef stalked because this movie is not entertaining this movie is a slog a tedious boring slug this movie is about an hour and 30 minutes and I swear to you each minute feels excruciating I'm going to get into that in just a moment but let me tell you about the movie first The Reef stalked was a movie that came out in 2022 by director writer Andrew tralke it um it's certainly something I'll tell you that it's apparently a sequel to the movie The Reef a shark movie that came out 12 years prior and it didn't do too well so I don't know what encouraged the director to make another movie but here we are also I believe this was originally made for shutter or it's a shutter original or shutters involved in some way because it's the first thing you see when you start the movie we start off with our four gal Pals Nick Jody Lisa and Kath and they are girl bossing it up they're spearing some fish to eat uh and just having a grand old time diving they're all experienced divers and this is just something that they do for fun so they take a selfie before having some brekkie down by the Bobby only at Outback Steakhouse and after this initial dive the movie takes a sharp turn into a realm that I did not expect and it's what I call the lifetime original movie realm I see I thought this was a killer shark movie but in actuality it's a lifetime movie parading is a shark movie because what ends up happening within like what the first 10 minutes of the movie is Nick's sister Kath has a bit of a domestic dispute with her husband and then when she gets back to her husband's Place Nick gets an ominous text message from Kath saying to help her saying to come and when Nick gets there kath's husband has murdered her cat's been as has strangled her in a bath so that was a sharp turn that I didn't expect and it cuts away to present day I think some months later after the funeral or whatever and Nick is traumatized she has PTSD because she you know she saw her sister in the bathtub and um yeah she wasn't able to go to the funeral and it spends a lot of time really focusing on this sort of PTSD caused by her sister's untimely demise and so I'm thinking to myself well that's kind of weird I mean when do we see the shark and so we cut to when Nick comes back she meets with her other gal Pals Jody and Lisa and her sister Annie who actually showed up when Nick got the text Annie is Nixon younger sister who becomes the replacement the main character along with the other three girls for the remainder of the movie and I gotta tell you uh they don't really do a good job introducing this character she's kind of just your typical genzir who's like oh you don't understand me you don't understand what I do and then you know she's on social media she's on her phone it's just it's just lazy writing I think Nick her sister Jody and Lisa go to a Pacific island kayaking sort of Adventure to kind of get away and to just close the book on kath's murder I guess kind of like putting a little Trinket in a box it's kind of like a nice send-off to their friend you know and so they go on this whole vacation this kayaking vacation just to chill and to kind of like close the book on that after they talk for a while Nick has more PTSD flashbacks and I'm thinking to myself okay is the shark gonna show up yet Nick is traumatized she goes into her room and she keeps thinking about it she's tormented by this and her friends Jody and Lisa are uh are trying to dance around her very carefully trying not to upset her but also not knowing how they can help and this is this this falls into more I was what I was talking about with a lifetime original movie because I remember when I was growing up watching movies on the lifetime channel and it would be kind of this kind of energy this weird like domestic energy and PTSD and overcoming something and so I'm like this doesn't really fit a killer shark movie at least in my opinion and so it's Annie's first time kayaking so they head out to this island resort that is I don't know some miles away from the island that they're on and that's when it starts again I think there's another PTSD scene on the way and because of this it's important to notice that Nick stopped diving because of her sister keth and her unfinely demise and that becomes a large part of this movie so I'm just waiting here I'm like okay when's the shark showing up when is the shark gonna show up and I I [ __ ] you not the first time they give us a taste of the shark is 30 minutes into the movie we see it's thin we see a little bit of the shark swimming but I'm thinking like that looks like stock footage and so I looked closely at it and I'm like they dead ass did that didn't they they used stock footage they put stock footage on top of the girl swimming which is kind of Genius because um I don't know how many of you are familiar with the Sci-Fi Channel original movies but they have cinematics in CGI that Rivals PS2 quality it's really shoddy and really stupid but this movie subverts that by opting not to do CGI and instead to do just footage composited on top of other footage so you get this weird Frankenstein's monster of a movie and when the shark shows up like it starts attacking them obviously it starts attacking the kayak and um spoilers although I don't think anybody cares Lisa ends up getting eaten by the shark off screen so you do the classic thing where the shark grabs her and there's this like this red cloud in the water and of course you know people are traumatized Jody's traumatized and it's just they have to make it to the island right and they noticed that like the island has kids on the kids are in the water so they're like oh we got to make it to the island quickly we gotta help these kids and uh sure enough they end up doing that and then they have to Trek to another Island because this island doesn't have internet or telephone access convenient and so they have to get on this shoddy boat two of The Kayaks are still operational but two of The Kayaks have been destroyed there's one dinky little motorboat that they have to use to get to a second island so that they can call or use the internet like you don't see much of the shark and by the time they're getting over to the second island I think it's like an hour into the movie and they're just talking and arguing over like oh well we can't we have to try and go to the shark we have to try and uh get to the second island and you know avoid the shark or we have to kill the shark on our way to get help you know that sword that type of beat because the one of the kids who was swimming in the water near the first island gets attacked by the shark but gets just a little bit of a laceration on her leg but they need to call for help so they can get medical assistance yeah they decide to risk it and go to the second island after which they end up fighting the shark again and that's really all that happens just talking PTSD and composite footage of a shark every time you think there's going to be some action or there's going to be like some gore or anything like that because you know like part of the reason why I would think you would watch these movies is because you know horrific stuff happens because the shark attacks but it all happens either off screen or in like this weird jump-cut shaky cam sort of thing so I was never a fan of that my biggest complaint with this movie was that the shark is only on screen for less than five minutes even if it is like a real shark or if it is you know footage of a real shark or if it's the animatronic fin that they used it's less than five minutes of the movie most of it is talking and most of it is like worrying about things and most of it is just being out in the ocean seeing nothing and so it's kind of a boring movie by the time an hour and 15 came around I was kind of just alt tabbing and reading various articles on my computer and then I had to remember oh yeah I want to watch this movie nothing really happens I mean their friend Lisa Bites the Dust early on but after that I mean that's pretty much it so I guess I won't spoil the ending if anybody plans on watching this movie but I'll just tell you that it's it's not great the whole movie is just bad and I think they had a missed opportunity here because since they had such a big focus on the relationship between Nick Annie and Kath I think they should have just made a drama that had Thriller elements involving a shark right I think they should have made a killer shark it's not really a killer shark movie it's just a movie that happens to have a killer shark and if you went in with that expectation of kind of like a drama that just happens to have a shark attack in it I think it would have worked far better for the movie because there's plenty of media I know that uses sci-fi fantasy um and Thriller aspects to just bolster its drama like one of my favorite games is uh life is strange the original one and there's time travel in that game and it's a big part of it but that's not the focus at least from what I can tell the focus is on the relationship between the characters and the time travel is sort of like just to bring more Focus to that so I think that in this case it could have just used the shark as a storytelling device to act as a metaphor for like the relationship between family members the relationship between friends that sort of thing or like overcoming adversity I think that would have been very easy and so just capitalizing on this sequel to a movie that no one probably watched is strange and misguided now I did like a couple things about this movie uh namely the GoPro shots that were in the beginning or the like GoPro ish shots I thought that was really cool you know seeing underwater I always like that but there wasn't enough of it and since the shark was just like from what I could tell composited onto other footage the shark itself does look great I also kind of liked Jody as a character I mean none of the characters were really that deep but I would say you know I like the the back and forth that some of the characters do I didn't like the bickering between Nick and her sister Annie you know the whole you don't understand me that happened again it comes it comes back it becomes really grading and it's like you want the action to start up again and so I didn't like that and I feel like the ending was pretty decent you know the ending was kind of like it put a nice bow on whatever the hell they ended up doing with it but overall it was just a very disappointing movie and I did not have fun watching it so I really wouldn't suggest it and if you do end up watching it just keep in mind what I said before the movie that's marketed as a horror you know with killer sharks killer shark is the smallest part about it oh before I forget there's this scene I really liked though with the shark yeah I think this is the part where Annie was on the kayak the kayak was upside down and I think she was like scared on top of it but the water is really clear and you see the clear water and then out of nowhere you see the shadow of the shark and like lightning the shark hits them so I'm like holy [ __ ] ninja shark so I thought that was cool but it definitely does not make up for the boring tedious slog that was the rest of the movie if you do think you can get something good out of it based on what I've told you then by all means go see it but uh don't blame it on me if you don't like it that's all I'm saying you know I didn't like it I will not be seeing it again but yeah that's the video guys I hope you had a good time I certainly had a good time making it let me know if you want to see more reviews like this in the future this one might seem a little clunky because I'm trying to get my feet wet no pun intended if you guys also have any suggestions about what to watch on Hulu please throw them my way I would greatly appreciate it hope you guys are doing well and staying safe this is Lucas and I'll catch you later

CC: [Music] we are talking the reef stalked this one is written and directed by andrew tralkey who also directed the original reef back in 2011. he was also responsible for the crocodile thriller blackwater now the original rig for 2011 movie is actually considered to be one of the better shark movies outside of the original george film and how did you do in this sequel well let's discuss the plot first of all it actually starts off quite similar in a way to neil marshall's descent we have a group of female friends one of which loses their life at the beginning of the movie and then because the remainder of the movie takes place sometime later with the remainder of the group trying to honor their fallen friends memory by kind of going on a little bit of a trip instead of cave diving like the descent this instance they decide to go a bit of snorkeling scuba diving and kayaking on this kind of beautiful coastal district area however as you probably expect because it's a shark movie of course there is a large great white in the vicinity which decided it's going to stalk this group of women for its lunch now what will happen you'll have to watch the movie and find out so let's discuss what we think of the reef stalks now there's been a lot of shark movies over the uh last few years and uh and please say this one does fall in the good camp of shark films as to how good well we have to wait to the end of the review but let me talk about what it works and hey here's the mounting it's going to go straight with my biggest um plus part on this this movie is a master class in creating tension it is a really tense film i haven't felt this tense in a sharp film since the original 47 meters down a film that i genuinely loved because it was so tense and this one really does make me feel pretty tense whilst watching it um chalky is a kind of a an expert of creating this kind of lurking menace this fear from the unknown under the waves but you know it's there and we have sequences where you know our kind of our friends are out in this kind of water and sometimes the shark will be there sometimes it's whether it has a great kind of build up you know the music the kind of the cinematography the kind of the slow kind of um you know sequences where someone's kind of reaching out for a a paddle or something like that and you don't know whether the shark's gonna attack sometimes as i say well sometimes it doesn't it's not there at all so i think it's really good in regards to um creating a tense movie with kind of like uh that feels kind of genuinely dangerous because our you know our protagonists are out there pretty much uh on their own actually they tend to be in these kind of shark movies and yet the but the danger the danger feels palpable i have to say i think our cast of four characters i thought these four women you know are a likable bunch they seem like kind of genuine friends and i think the acting uh the four of them are all pretty solid i think there's some kind of decent kind of set pieces uh involving this kind of shark i mean it does kind of rinse and repeat a little bit which will come on to uh but there are some kind of fun sequences where having this kind of shark attacking and it actually takes a lot of kind of like cues from other movies as i've said the the kind of the setup is very much like the descent but there's kind of uh there's cues from jewels here you know we have an attempt to um uh to kill the shark for example or they use an object to try and make it drowned and it's it will remind you of kind of the barrel scene from jaws and we have kind of uh kids playing on a raft it reminds you of uh you know the shallows things like that so it does take elements from other movies but i feel the movie does it you know it did justice in fact because it still incorporates them in in a kind of a quite entertaining way i was engaged throughout the movie um one of the things that made jaws such a good film was uh these characters because the shark let's be honest isn't on screen the hell of a lot and what you you could have attached to to that film is good character work and i think that is true of this film as well the shark effects are a little bit of a mixed bag we'll come on to what doesn't work it in just a moment but the um the director hey like he did in kind of black water and kind of the reef rather than having a lot of kind of cgi and kind of model work he chooses to use footage of real kind of animals and admittedly some of it looks like it's kind of stock footage just inserted into a film but there is something that is incorporated very well for example when you know the shark is biting down on the kind of boat things like that it looks you know you kind of you think it's biting down on that boat with these people in it and there are a couple of instances where i think they've used real footage to kind of superimpose um you know our actors on there or vice versa and those sequences where it's using the kind of the real shark uh or real shock footage he's done fairly well i i have to say and we also got a lot of kind of like you know the fit in the water which is used very very kind of effectively i think the cinematography is excellent you know it can erect you so there's kind of this beautiful kind of setting but obviously you know you have the facade of beauty but we have this kind of danger ever-present kind of lurking uh beneath the waves the soundtrack it really kind of works to extenuate the kind of the tension in the movie and the movie overall is pretty entertaining you know it you get about half an hour in really before we kind of get the kind of shark attacks but i think the movie um gives us a reasonable amount of kind of in-depth kind of character work before then uh so it doesn't feel like you're having to wait ages until you get the action and things like that okay so what doesn't work um i feel this movie has its dumb moments and there's certain character choices and things that they do in this movie that you're just thinking why would people do this i'll give you a couple of examples um we have our four kind of friends out on the candidacy at one point and one of them is quite inexperienced uh you know you know she's kind of like uh um the one that hasn't doesn't normally come out of the group and she's actually the youngest sister of our kind of our main character and she sees a shark because she tells the world that she's seen the shark and but they they decide they're going to split up so rather than kind of sticking together in like a kind of like a caravan of these kind of kayaks you know two of them a lot way ahead one of them is kind of like a little bit further on and then leaving this very inexperienced girl just after she shed a shark like way behind of course then that's where the shark decides it's going to have its first attack which seemed like an odd choice to me it seemed like these these characters just went off and left her without really ever checking he just you know it seems it's a little over an odd choice we have a sequence in the movie where we encounter like a family of other characters and they are on this island and they're like oh have you got any you know phones no no phones not on here but how how these people like on this island without any means of communication and escape i mean surely they have at least a flare gun but that's never asked for um i mean why these people would be on an island trapped without any boats or kind of communications it's beyond me without any type of at least a flare gun and then we have a couple of other instances i don't go for every single one but there are a couple of instances where again it's just like silly kind of decisions uh movie decisions are kind of mannequin of the uh uh the plot going to have a certain direction now when you compare that to the original refinement so that was much more of a realistic film i think in a patrol to a point it to a you know where a portrayal of someone in that kind of peril i think would would act quite kind of uh naturally here i you know explain movie decisions rather than kind of like real life decisions um now in regards to the acting i think our four main cast do a great job but there are some kind of smaller roles here where the acting isn't particularly strong their minor role is not a big deal don't have a huge amount of screen time uh but i have to kind of point out the cgi of the shark now when the movie does use cgi unfortunately it's quite poor now it uses mostly real footage of sharks for the bulk of the shock or it uses like a practical fin or something like that um but when we do have a you know a shock fire cgi normally when it's breaching that looks quite poor there's even one shot where it doesn't even look like it's finished to be honest it's a shame because this to me seemed like a bit of a higher profile uh shark movie compared to some of the kind of the you know the the normal kind of strength of vod kind of movies and it's it's a shame that he couldn't have a little bit more rendering on the kind of the shark it just is a little bit too fake at times um uh yeah but it doesn't use this cgi all that much to be honest so when we do have this cgi it looks poor but wisely they use the cgi to a minimum it's like maybe kind of like no more than 10 seconds of screen time but you will notice it in those 10 seconds i have to say um the movie does feel somewhat derivative of other movies i think it kind of homages them quite well if that's what it was doing and i think those people might not even notice but it does seem to be using the best parts of other films uh to be honest to kind of make this one if the original reef was quite because of a realistic depiction very much people often compare the original reef to open water and if that was somewhat like an original kind of um a but realistic kind of you know idea of a shark attack maybe this one's a lot more kind of like um typical kind of movie logic and it doesn't feel quite as raw as the kind of the original one but in a way i would say it's a little bit more polished and has a little bit more of a kind of a glossy um exciting feel to it than the original so depending on what you like i mean it's kind of um tit-for-tat on that i i still think this movie so this is a extremely entertaining movie you know i wasn't bored for a minute um like i said this movie does an excellent job of building these these tenses some great moments and some great kind of like scares but we could have will get because of the shark attacking and and kind of making a mess relatively low body count and not a lot of goal um obviously if you compare this to a movie like shark bite which came out recently another movie um that went for visceral kind of thrills gory deaths um this one goes for a you know more a kind of a tension an atmosphere kind of building um so it may be depending on what you like better uh than those that they're both kind of worth checking out but this one is a good movie um it's certainly a little bit more polished and kind of glossy than the original film i would say but it's certainly an entertaining one certainly in the category of a worthwhile watch beating movies like great white or the requiem that have come out kind of quite recently um i was told whether to give this one a six or a seven to be honest um so i would kind of say like a 6.5 in a way um it's i don't really like giving half marks but i'm really tall on on how to score this one uh so i'll say a 6.5 even though i don't have a graphic for that um but yeah it's worth a watch if you like the shark movie i don't think it's necessarily an all-time classic but it's definitely in the uh upper echelons of decent shark movies of which the list is not all that big to be honest have you seen it will you watch it leave me a comment and i'll look forward to seeing you next time bye for now [Music]
